New Methodology - 5S. [November 2005]
Origin

The idea started in Japan to get lasting improvements, using a systematic study of organisation, order and cleanliness. Toyota developed it because of the requirements of a production process with the “just in time” philosophy.

DEFINITION

SEIRI (ORGANISATION OR SELECTION)
SEITON (ORDER)
SEISO (CLEANLINESS)
SEIKETU (VISUAL CONTROL)
SITSUKE (DISCIPLINE, HABIT)

This “5s” methodology tries to have only the necessary materials at the work station, not the unnecessary. To keep them orderly and identified so that the personnel know where they are. To keep dirty areas under control, and try to eliminate them before cleaning.
This helps to see at a glance if anything for the job is missing. It is also helpful to maintain the work station in a clean and orderly state.

The principal benefits to the company are:

Reduction of material changes
Reduction of defects and therefore improvements in quality
Reduction of delays and therefore improvements in service
Reduction in physical risks and therefore improvements in safety.

The principal benefits to the workforce are:

A more comfortable and safe workplace
Eradication of obstacles and frustrations at work.
Increase in safety

Automatic capture of production data [September 2004]
The necessity to improve our processes, in order to fulfill the more and more demanding conditions of the market about production time, has made us initiate a process of productivity improvement based on methodologies from the most advanced business sectors. As a support for all of these methodologies (5s, SMED, Read Manufacturing), our semiautomatic system of data capture in plant has been replaced by a completely automatic system. This system allows us to have exact data about production times and down times, and provides the necessary information for our continual improvement in our processes.
